John Donne - Phillip Vo

"Death, be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so."

As mortal creatures who have either heard of, seen, or personally experienced the death of someone we know, the thought of death can easily strike fear in our hearts. Death is the great equalizer: it comes to all, and it brings weight to our actions on earth. We have an expiration date, which should remind us every day that our actions have consequences. What we do leaves a legacy as to the kind of person we were. The odd thing is, as Christians, we often are still so afraid at the thought of passing away during this life. As Paul wrote, "To live is Christ, and to die is gain." We have the ultimate peace in knowing that after we cross the threshold from life into death, or perhaps a new life, we will spend eternity with God. That should give us a sense of calm and purpose while we live in the here and now.

  1. Amen. Christ has already defeated death, meaning there is no fear in death. Eternity should give us a sense of peace but the reality of death should give us a sense of urgency to share with everyone. Great words Phillip! -Anna Grace Gay
