To Commit Suicide, Or to Not Commit Suicide?

Honors,
I think the fact that we so regularly address and quote Hamlet is a little frightening. First of all, the most quoted speech from Hamlet which is found in Act III. IS COMPLETELY ABOUT SUICIDE! Like does this guy need a therapist because I sure think he does! The fact that he goes through this long soliloquy and then talks to Ophelia like nothing just happens is creepy BUT THEN he goes on to MURDER HER FATHER and his mom is just kind of there? This play is so interesting and so crazy and a little morbid all at the same time. I think a lot of what is going through Hamlet's mind in Act III is his "acting" getting the better of him. He seems to be morphing into the very thing he is trying to convince everyone that he is which is why it might not be so surprising that their reactions to everything is nonchalant. Overall, Act III is a pivotal part of this play and I think it is where we truly get to see Hamlet's dark mind taking over.

  1. Isn't this what happens to everyone. We tend to turn into the person that we try so hard to not be. Better yet, someone who we try to prove as wrong. During majority of this play, Hamlet is trying to accuse his uncle of murder. Not only is he upset about it being his father, but he is disappointed that the king is a dishonest and murderous man. Then, by this part in the play he turns into exactly that. He kills Ophelia's father and is lying to his friends and family about his sanity. Moral of the story--in the words of Kermit the frog--that's none of my business. --Kayla Gill

  2. I agree Act 3 plays a huge role in the play. Hamlet is really messed up honestly. He can’t make up his mind, he’s contemplating suicide, and literally going crazy. The craziest part to me is when he acted like absolutely nothing even happened after his mad moment just like you said! I am really interested in finding out how he turns out as a person in the end.
