Real or Not Real- Madison Flowers

So before getting into all this, I need to know if I was the only one that kept singing the song Ophelia by the Lumineers while I was reading this book?  If you have not heard it, listen to it because it is a great song.

Back to the matter at hand, is Hamlet actually insane?  He says in the beginning that he is only going to pretend to be insane so that he can get away with this murder.  But I have to wonder if maybe in all of his pretending, he has confused himself as well.  Once caught in a lie for such a long time, it is hard to remember what is real and what is not real.  His interaction between Ophelia in Act 3 is what really made me start questioning this because if that was all pretend, then the boy is a good actor.  Again, though, if he really has lost his mind, then Hamlet’s plan to watch Claudius’ reaction to the play they were all going to see together is not something an insane man would think to do, is it? This boy really has me confused at the moment and I am heckin curious to see where this goes.

I guess I will end with this question: When does it stop being pretend and start becoming real?

  1. Seriously though! I just wrote my blog post on this too. I think that Hamlet is actually insane, regardless of if he started acting or not. I have no idea where he went from 'acting' to actually being insane, but I think that this dude is messed up in the head.

  2. No matter what someone is trying to convince people about themsevles, it usually wears on them. It eats at their insides and eventually crumbles away whether that be in the form of mental health or outwardly apperances. In this case, Hamlet is completely overwhelmed by what he is/has become. I imagine him feeling like the insect caught in a spiderweb not realizing he is the spider, himself.

  3. Hamlet kind of reminds me of the people who say, “I’m going to try it, and that’ll be the end of it.” But then they like what they’ve gotten themselves into so much that it’s no longer beta testing, it’s actually become something that’s twisted around their personality and they can’t shale it. Hamlet was playing the role quite well, until the role started playing him.

  4. So this is exactly what I wrote my blog post on and I also think that it's an amazing song lol. But I am also a little confused and think the subject is a little hazy on when exactly is Hamlet's turning point and when does the realness become real?? I have no clue if that makes sense but it's what I am thinking right now so.
