Weird Snakes and Gold gods - Cade Wood
Two things caught my eye throughout this reading. Both of these things are very very different from one another, so just bear with me. The first thing that caught my eye was in Canto 19 line 112. It says, "Silver and gold you've made into your idol." I think Phillip actually wrote on something similar to this last week, but I thought it interesting that it talked about this. I may go a little out of context here, but what's new. It reminds me of the world and all the idols within the world. Some of these idols are intentional, and some of them are completely unrecognized. For example, some idols that we know of would be having a lot of money, being really popular, or being stuck on social media. Now alone, those things are not bad things, it just depends on how one uses these things that make it an idol. Being popular does not make someone a bad person. In fact, popularity often gives one a platform in which they can influence those around them. However, if someone takes popularity and lets it consume them, that's when it becomes a problem. I know all of us have heard something like this before, so I'll stop there, but something else interesting happened today in my Ministry Leadership class.
In this class today we discussed social media effects on the digital age with churches. Basically, we tried to answer the question, "Is it bad to have a social media platform as a church, and is it bad to live stream as a church." We answered it as no depending on the church's motive. But even church leaders can make their social media an idol. They often have good intentions of just getting Jesus out there to the people on social media, but then it turns into something else. Thinking about that along with what I read just made me think I needed to be more careful with what I am consumed by.
The second thing that stuck out to me was weird, and it is short. It is in Canto 25 when he talks about the 6 footed snake and the changing of the thieves. It starts on line 49, and it just made me think of the Cherubim and how they have 6 wings, which then made me think that the snake was hell's Cherubim. Just minus the whole flying around God, or in this case Satan, and the chanting of Holy, Holy, Holy..'. So really, I guess they're nothing like the Cheribum other than the whole 6 wings and 6 feet.

Yeah man! Pretty much all of the circles are examples of people who idolized something in place of where God should be (exception being the first circle with those who never got the chance). Going back to the Augustinian idea, all things are created good and the farther away we get from God in anything the more broken it becomes.
ReplyDeleteI like how you discussed the unknown idols. The platform of popularity being able to be utilized for good, or evil. The sins that are hardest to stray from are the sins we often do not even recognize. Part of this could be the worship of unknown idols, this being a phone, a person, or even a goal in life. Something we view my important to us than God. But I definitely like where you went with this one Cade.
