Switching it up a bit -Sydney Snow

Most people, not all, would generally talk about the woman in "Desiderius Erasmus, The Abbot and the Learned Lady," but I am going to switch it up a bit and talk about the man. The whole piece is about the controversy of women being educated by reading Latin books, but lets look a little deeper than that. If you read closely, you can see why men do not want "learned ladies." When talking about his monks, Antonius states that "I do not want any of mine to know more than I do." I believe it is for that reason that men do not want when to be learned. They are afraid of someone to be better than them, both men and women. It is just a scarier fact for men to be out-smarted by women, those who probably weren't seen as remotely equal to men at this time. And when Magadlia suggest that suggest that he try to become wiser along with everyone else, he eventually tells her that he doesn't want to put in the card work. In conclusion, men are lazy and hold others back. Im totally joking! Men in this time were afraid of the change that came along with allowing women to step up to their potential. hey feel threatened.

On a side not, Antonius also mentioned that one is living well when they are having a good time. I see this as both true and false. No one wants a life of dullness. Having fun everyone once in a while is good for you, but there is a time for seriousness as well. Not everything in life can be a laid-back joke. People would never get anything done.

  1. I love your thoughts on this! I find it interesting that with women growing in knowledge or wanting to grow in knowledge that it didn't spur the men on to greater things? If they felt threatened why didn't they try to do anything about it? I also enjoyed your thoughts on Antonius's opinion that living well is when you are having fun. I feel that yes, there is a time for fun but that fun still needs to be honoring to God. -Anna Grace Gay

  2. I think that it would be scary for anyone to have someone who is smarter than them, especially if their mind is their strongest attribute. Some people are good at music, some are crazy athletic, and some are insanely smart. I think that anyone would be scared they were bested by someone in their field of expertise. We are all human and have some level of pride, so i don't think it would be just men that do that; however, i do see where you're coming from in relation to the story!

  3. I also think you can take part in aquiring knowledge and spending leisure time! Too much of either can surely weigh you down though. I was curious as to why neither of them mentioned conjoining the two, but the author hit the mark either way! Great Blog, Syd!
