Strange things happen in Hell -Sydney Snow

There are some things going on in this book that make me stop and ask myself "Did he really just say/do that?" One of the major things that just made me stop is when Virgil carries Dante. Someone who has never read this may be like "Why is that such a big deal? Maybe he was helping him?" It was the way that he carried Dante that was very strange. Virgil was carrying Dante on his hip, like a child. I cannot be the only one picturing this image of these two grown men in my head in my head and be kind of grossed out. Don't even get me started on the serpents. In one canto, the serpents can make the inhabitants to burst into flame, turn into ash, and the transform like the phenix in Harry Potter. In the next canto, the can melt the shades and turn them into serpents too? What even is going on here.

On a more serious note, there was a sentence that stood out to me in canto twenty. Lines 29-30 state "Who is more wicked than the man who longs to make God's judgement yield to human forces?" I feel as if I have some sort of grasp as to what is being talked about. Since this canto is dedicated to the diviners, who I think are like fortune tellers and mystical things like that, I believe it is geared more towards that. But, as always, I am no expert and could be wrong. But we as people should not try to play and toy with His judgements and plans. We should should yield to his judgment, not the other way around. We are only hurting ourselves if we "play with the Lord like that" as my friends and I say. And, according to Dante's standards, one will end up crying with our heads on backwards so the tears roll down our backs.

  1. Honestly, just laughed out loud while picturing Dante being carried on Virgil's hips! And goodness gracious, I can't tsand the thought of the serpents, either. Great blog, Syd!

  2. It's a bit of a Scooby and Shaggy relationship!

Some of this might be intentionally humorous in order to get the attention of the middle class.
