It’s Getting Messy! By Brenna Stringfellow
Specifically I want to talk about a quote that stated, “And while I searched the bottom with my eyes I saw a man, his head so s***-besmeared you couldn’t tell if he were lay or priest.” Yes this is a pretty gross comment, but I love it. I say that because in the end, it’s not going to matter your status, Dante couldn’t even tell who this man was when he was filthy. The reason is because we are all human, and status doesn’t matter because there will always manage to be a place in hell for you regardless (not really). We are human though, and to see Dante ascend to different levels of hell and see so many people, it’s show that only one thing matters in the end according to Christianity.
Also, the description of the devil being, “black as H***,” made me think of him as a combination of Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon, and Wolsey’s black cat from The Master and Margarita. It didn’t make me think of the devil per say, because I don’t foresee him to be the scary figure he has been portrayed as, but to influence the intimidating environment of Dante a scarier devil was more appropriate.
I commented on Zane and Michael’s post.
I agree. The thing is, we can not take our status with us either place we go, whether that be heaven or hell. The verse that states (forgive me I cant remember where it is right now) that it is easier for a rich man to enter the gates of heaven than for a camel to go through the eye of a needle. This isnt saying you can't be well off and have money and be saved. It is reffering back to how money is the root of evil. You can't have two gods or masters. Therefore, you cannot serve money and serve God at the same time. Again, being trapped in hell, your staus is also left behind. So, while it prohibited you from being in heaven, it also did not help you in hell.
ReplyDeletePS: I thought of "How to Kill a Dragon" in this part too.
Honestly, that canto kinds of made me laugh. All I could picture was a dirty priest covered in....well you know. Anyways, back to the serious stuff. People tend to care an awfully lot about status. If you're rich, there's certain people you shouldn't hang around and certain things you shouldn't do. Same goes for the poor. But in reality, we cannot take anything with us when we go, especially if you go to hell. You may even lose some things there. And if you try to, just read Dante and find out what will happen (not really though because this is just one mans perception of Hell).
