Is wisdom everything? -Anna Grace Gay

In “The Abbot and the Learned Lady”, by Erasmus, I was constantly brought back to a specific conversation between Magdalia and Antronius. Magdalia asks the question, “Where does this good time come from? From externals or from within?” Antronius responds with, “From externals.”Antronius later goes on to say that the measure of good times is by sleeping, dinner parties, doing as one likes, money and honors. Magdalia argues that all those things can not make you happier, only wisdom makes you a better and happier person. I believe she has a point but I also have the opinion that more could be added to that happiness. I agree that we should read and have an education. Education is one of the greatest things in our society and we are beyond blessed to have the opportunity to participate in it. When God has blessed you with tools and opportunities to better yourself and gain wisdom, those opportunities should be taken full advantage of! Growing up in the time we do, education is not held as high as it should be most of the time. The ability to learn and become a wiser person is an amazing thing that can lead to a lot of happiness. I don't know about you all but when I receive a great grade back I am extremely happy! I believe that we should continually be striving to work harder and learn more and become more wise in all areas of life that God has us in. But I also argue that there is more to happiness than just being wise. There is more to it than knowing all the correct answers for every situation. True happiness comes from Christ. He is the giver of all things and that includes wisdom. I believe to be honoring to Him we should try our hardest in everything we do and try to become a better and wiser person to bring glory to the kingdom of God. When we do that I honestly believe we will be truly happy. Even at the end of the day, if we didn't do as well as we had expected or things didn't go our way, we still have Jesus and we can still be happy! I feel as though that sounds so simple but I personally know I am constantly comparing myself and trying to become smarter and learn more and become a more well rounded person, which is important, but that isn’t everything in life. Jesus is everything. If you have Him, you can be truly happy.

  1. I agree with you that more things can be added to this category of things that should make one happy. Everyone finds happiness in different things. For example fruit, sleep, and Netflix makes me happy, temporary that is. But I do also believe that education can bring some happiness as well. I mean who wants to not know anything. I loved reading this post.
