Exactly What You Thought Yet Not At All -Sydney Snow

The first time I read this, I only read on the ninth circle, so it is good to be able to read it in its entirety.

Anyways, back to our topic. What has always fascinated me about how this book is set up is the fact that it is exactly how our minds work. I know that sounds strange, but bear with me. The Bible says that all sins are equal. But, because we are human, we tend to rate our sins. We don't look at lying and murder the same way. The circles of Hell are set up the same way. They rate the sins. You start off with Limbo, which is for those who live right but lack faith. Next, there is the lustful circle. Then, we see gluttonous circle. And the "sins" keep progressing into those we would rank as high on the list of sins. This is how many people can sometimes view sin, even though we are not supposed to.

It is also interesting that Dante decides to describe hell using mostly ice instead of fire. In the this circle, the inhabitants are punished with ice rain. And from earlier readings and discussions in dual-enrollment, I know that it is going to only get older for these "inmates." Sorry if I spoiled anything for anyone. This gives a whole new meaning to frostbite. Today, we see Hell as this fiery type pit, or whatever pops into your head that involves fire. But, to be presented with this portrayal of ice and cold is quite unusual for many people.
