Unhardened Hearts and Minds Katie Byars

The book laments the people who died because the world could not understand their ideas. It tells of Socrates and Anaxagoras who both died because of what they taught to be true. Many people in history have been attacked for their ideas secular or not and many have died for them. And yet we have still not learned from history because many people refuse to listen to others. They have hardened their hearts like Pharaoh did and only listen to their ideas over and over. It is not right to reject an idea outright just because of how ridiculous it sounds, like the other planets not revolving around the earth or the moon reflecting light from the sun. Because these ideas sounded ridiculous long ago. If you told someone in Boethius`s time that you could talk to someone around the world then they would think that you are a witch and yet here we are. Honors is one of the important places where we are surrounded by different ideas and like how last class ended everyone had something to add to the discussion and there were many different ideas, but we listened to everyone and weigh their words to see if we agreed or not. It is important to read or listen to ideas that oppose your own. Sometimes you might change your mind and sometimes you believe even more what you believed in before. As long as you gave the idea a fair chance that is what matters.

I commented on Breanna`s and Owen`s post.

  1. History will only repeat itself. So if lives have been lost in the past because people wouldn't be open to other ideas, then this will only be repeated. But maybe it's on a lower level. Maybe it's just that people's thoughts aren't heard which means they either feel like they have no voice or just aren't important because no one listens. It is beyond important to listen to other people's opinions and thoughts. This is one of my favorite things about honors! -Anna Grace Gay
