O Builder of the starry Universe
"O Builder of the starry universe!
Sky spinner, star whirler,
You are the commander.
All obey your laws." (Boethius pg 23)
This little piece hit me. In my Creative Nonfiction class, I just finished posting for our C. S. Lewis reading of the first two books of Mere Christianity. The first book establishes the moral common ground that all humanity shares. Murder, rape, theft, etc. are all commonly seen as wrong and detrimental to societal cohesion. Last spring, our Honors project was a debate between points of view. As part of the Bertrand Russell team I had to defend an Atheist view on morality. The question my group was given by the Lewis team: "If God does not exist, what need is there for morality?" I replied "If He does not exist, the only need for morality is the survival of mankind and the continued function of society."
Why did these lines above hit me as they did, you might ask? Because whether or not we admit it; all of mankind follows the laws set in place by God for the basic morality. Boethius understood this. Everyone on this planet, in some form or another, mutually agrees that certain behaviors are wrong and others right. Lewis, I believe, shows the same point very well. There is a moral law that dictates all of us to behave a certain way for the sake of peace and social interaction. Without these laws, chaos would ensue over the whole planet.
P.S. I will be commenting on Anna Gay and Brenna's posts.
