Modern Ministers and Augustine
This first blog is not really one of deep thought. In fact, it is more of a base thought that crossed my mind when I thought of some things I have seen over the years. I had a moment of clarity about a church I used to attend that led to this post.
In Book V.iii, Augustine mentions a Manicheean bishop named Faustus. This man is described as "a great trap of the devil" for his smooth words. If anyone doesn't know what a Manichee is, Google it. Needless to say, the Manichees do not believe the way Christians do about a number of things. Yet, the smooth talk Augustine briefly mentions reminds me of so many "Christian" churches today. So often, we see lies propagated by people who claim to be Christians. Whether it be from cherry-picking the scriptures or outright denying parts that are not liked, ministers of the lies use smooth and comforting words to lead countless people astray. The Manichees took elements from several religions in order to form one that would satisfy what they wanted. This is exactly how the world is now. Christian churches pick and choose what to believe from the Bible while denying other parts. This is inexcusable. All scripture is to be used together. So my question is: when will we kick the Manichees of our day out of the churches and do things the right way?
P.S. I will be commenting on Will and Spencer's posts.
