Just two guys tryna do this whole Christian life thing.

Saint Augustine could have published the confessions in 2019 and they’d still be applicable in today’s world. His understanding of how sin affects man and how the desires of man effect himself are spot on and thought-provoking to the point of me actually enjoying reading (which doesn’t happen often). He speaks, in section 3 of book 3, of how he feels more pity for those who find joy in wickedness, than those who are saddened by the inability to indulge themselves in their sin of choice. Often times we can become so angry with God for not giving us what we want when we want it. But God knows what He’s doing, and is much smarter than simple ol’ mankind. Augustine recognizes this in saying how it is worse for a man to be allowed to indulge in sin and find pleasure in it.

We as Christians, imperfect beings serving a perfect God, will always face these struggles. But I found a sort of comfort in knowing that, even in the era of Saint Augustine, he was still struggling and fighting some of the same battles we do today. About how in our stubbornness we drift further away from God; How we allow ourselves to reside consistently among those who aren’t seeking after Him “shamelessly unashamed”. He fell into the influence of powerful men of the church, but soon realized how their truth, was lacking any true truth at all; reminding me of how I myself use to blindly accept the words of a church elder, believing the stories and “truths” he told to be biblical. I see a lot of parallels in the things both Augustine and I have learned and overcome through getting older and seeking God more. Augustine is a pretty neat guy.

I commented on Cade and Sydney’s posts.

  1. I find him to be extremely relatable, mostly because he's transparent! It's hard to be real about our struggles and issues, and Augustine puts it all display for us to have a chance to learn from his mistakes and pursue God for who he really is. It is in reading this book that I have realized that many of his thoughts have been my own, and I've just needed to see them on paper.
