God-Breathed

There are many different things to comment on what is written in the book, but what really caught my eye is how Saint Augustine can`t go one page without quoting scripture. He tells his story by using words to bind different parts of scripture together to create a story of praise to God. Individually he uses it to point the reader back to God and praise Him. All of our stories reflect God`s mercy, love, and forgiveness and because of this reflection, all of our stories are told through scripture. Not just very broadly through how we are all sinners, but very closely through our personal sins and struggles. The bible contains relates to us today as it did when it was first written and will be in the future. This is why in our struggles we need to consult the bible first and not try to face life on our own or just listen to others. Augustine not only uses scripture to do all these things, but he also uses it because, in the end, the words in between don`t matter only the written word of God as “all scripture is God-breathed” (2 Tim. 3:16)

  1. Augustine refrences the Bible so much because it is a confession. Not only a confession to the readers, but a confession to God. So, we are encountering his prayer. Quoting scripture is always a way to strike reassurance. My dad is a pastor and a part of that is he usually has to hold counseling sessions. He says that one way he helps people who have lived horible lives is helps them learn scripture that reassures their salvation. Maybe, this helps Augustine not only find assurance in salvation, but also comfort in his fears.

  2. The Bible contains dozens of stories, and I love how you pointed out how those stories can relate to our own. The Bible is not meant as some ancient text for us to say 'oh, this happened'. It's meant for us to exam through our own experiences and find out what the truths and lessons mean, not just for us, but for everyone. I really liked that you pointed out how the Bible is everyone' story, because it is -- everyone can find a piece of themselves or what they have gone through somewhere in scripture.

  3. I think it is beautiful how Augustine is constantly referencing scripture! I shows us how much he now relies on Christ and His word for comfort, healing, and forgiveness. You are so right when you said that all of our stories reflect God's mercy, love, and forgiveness; I know mine sure does!
