Confessions bk 9-11: Ultimate Wife -- Sophia Colbert

Perhaps I'm the only one who thinks about this, but how does one coexist with a spouse without strangling the other person? How does one become the ultimate lover, supporter, and forgiver for another? One answer might be too marry someone you really really really really like and get along with well. That's a good answer, but like the ACT, it's not the one I'm looking for. Everyone had bad days where you hate the guts of another human being. It's easy to get along when you like someone, when you think they deserve to be treated right. Monica did not have a choice in whom she married. According to Augustine, her husband was an A-class jerk. She probably had every right to yell, fight, and scream at her husband, but she didn't. Despite his violent tendencies, Patrick never hit Monica, even when they disagreed. Why? Because Monica was gentle and tactful. She didn't raise her voice, and she always explained her reasons to her husband. This is the ultimate way to have a successful marriage. Communication is vital to every relationship, and Monica knew how to communicate effectively and respectfully to her atheist husband. I want to be like her when I grow up.

P.S. I commented on Eliza and Cody's posts.

  1. AMEN!!! As someone pointed out to me in a conversation today, everyone has bad days and a lie that is going around like wildfire is that there are relationships completely free of all problems and trouble. HAH! As if that could happen..... so it isn't that a relationship needs to be free from problems, it's that you need the strength of character to withstand the storm. Monica, in a way, was a lot like the Proverbs 31 woman, which I don't know about you but that's my goal character. Like, I have that sucker jotted down in so many notebooks... I also compare the wanting of my character to a sunflower, even on the gloomiest day imaginable, I want to be looking for the sun... always living life on the bright side.
