A Man of Only Talent

People who, being concerned for the education of their sons, were unwilling that I should ever be free.” (Chapter 9, section 4). Augustine and all of his lyrical genius; now a slave of the 3rd-century education system. Sure a parent should care about her child’s education, but to expect the teacher to give up his health and well being just so little Johnny can get an A? No sir and/or ma’am this not okay. My man Augustine does not need flack from some little old soccer mom. But oh shoot does he snap back!! “But, most merciful God, did you not grant pardon and remission for this fault together with my other horrendous and mortal sins, in the holy water of baptism?” How do you argue with that?

Augustine also addresses in section 2 how we should guard our ears and hearts. Many times people around us can come into our lives attempting to advise us in one direction or another; and, even if their intentions are good, they may in there lack of true understanding of the situation or in pure ignorance, be much more harmful. That’s not even mentioning those who advise you with selfish intentions, desiring to gain from what they speak into you. We have to guard our hearts carefully and take each word spoken into it through a filter of scripture and self-assessment.

I commented on Cade and Spencer’s posts.

  1. It is harder than you think to guard our hearts and minds. I know personally that I feed myself things I probably shouldn't via YouTube, Facebook, gossip, etc.. The best way to spot counterfeit truth is to study the real stuff inside and out, forwards and backwards, upside-down and right-side up, something which we all need to improve.

  2. I agree, and have often been quick to heed the advice of those who meant well but just didn't understand. We have to come to God for all counsel and direction, referring to His Word to guide us through life's difficulty before any man!

  3. I commented, and Sydney talks about how Augustine is writing to help the church know how to be a church, so its fun to me to see him reference scripture and expound on it to make it easier to understand.
