Bible History and Israel as It's Beginning
The Bible. As a religious book and explanation of how the Jewish and Christian faiths were founded, it is the manual, promise, and hope for millions of people worldwide. As a look into history, it is absolutely beautiful. The readings for we had this time only give a small taste of the Israelite history. Poetry and song, prophecy and redemption; it's Israel's history. It is God's history. Israel's history is so ingrained with the influence and presence of God that it can be hard to differentiate between the history and the supernatural parts. Well, what if we actually took the Bible as God actually intends. The Bible is God's history. All history is His.
Out of the readings, I liked the Psalms. Both of them show how history is key to Jewish belief. From the Patriarch's all the way to the King's, God places himself firmly within everything. His Law gives Israel a way of functioning as a society while leaving the Lord at the center. His promises (many conditional) ensure Israel's place in the world and give them incentive to remain obedient. The Bible catalogues the reason the world is how it is, how God plans to fix it, as well as the events that brought Jews and Christians to the world.
Like the Romans and Greeks, Judaism and Christianity sees God's influence in everything. This is a drastic change to the Mesopotamian and Babylonian gods, which seemed rather indifferent to man. The God of the Bible is also the only God that truly cares about the welfare of mankind. After all he did send Christ as the ultimate sacrifice for mankind.
P.S. I will be commenting on Moriah and Cade's posts.
