Rome is the greatest. Ever. Right? mmmmmmmm no.

Okay, so I need to take a second to say- OH MY GOSH!! It's freak out time for me, my friends. A lot is going on and I am currently giving my all to stay on top of things. So if I go crazy in the next paragraph, just know. I think I am going crazy (crazy busy). If anyone has milk and sees this soon and can bring it to me, I will share a glass of chocolate milk with you.... Please.
The real thing I wanted to discuss this evening is how conceited this historian is about Rome. Listen to this: "Now, if any nation ought to be allowed to claim a sacred origin and point back to a divine paternity that nation is Rome." Rewind. This mans just said that if a nation was even ALLOWED to say "Hey other nations, we're so cool that we're actually sacred" they would HAVE to claim ROME as their divine parent. This is clearly wrong, because let's face it- Rome eventually fell. Now how can you call something that has failed and died divine and worthy to be an origin of other nations? That simply does not make sense to me.
This is why I am very glad to place my roots in the one who never fails. We all have an origin, and like it or not we all share that origin. It's God. Can I get an Amen? *Steps off of Soapbox*
Moving forward. This guy basically says that Rome is the STUFF to model your nation after. Now, I know we use some of Rome's principles but we did not use all of them, thank God. However, there is one thing that our historian says in this reading that I firmly agree with, and that is the benefits of studying history. Our historian says that in the study of history, we can see examples of what to do and what not to do when we build new communities. And that is why I am thankful for the recording of history because without it we will not know what decisions to make for our future as a country and as a community. We must always look towards history for advice and for guidance. Never take it for granted, because it's powerful stuff when applied to our current lives.

I commented on Cody's and Phillip's posts.

  1. Brilliant argument. Rome it seems to me has this idea that we are the best and that no one else is. Though this is not just a trait Rome had they took it to the extreme. I mean look at Rome and its senate and how it makes decisions they actually think they are the best. While yes, we use some of their ideas, we look to the mistakes of the past to build our future. No society can be perfect yet we can take the good aspects and use them.

  2. I agree Rome really isn’t all that great and they made themselves out to be. Yes they were a great empire at one time, but hey all good things must come to an end right? I also have to agree that I’m glad we didn’t adopt all of Rome’s principles only some. History does repeat itself but it’s a great thing we do have it so we can know how to do things a certain way.
