Argument Wisdom--Kayla Gill

"There was no final settlement in sight, nor would there be as long as agitators were honored in proportion to the success of their agitation."

This is a small line from the passage of the Livy. It is a great piece of wisdom on the underlying issues with solving arguments. In this reading, there is a clear segregation about to social classes in ancient Rome. There are many arguments that arise about the rights and place holdings of the Plebs (lower class people).   The people of Rome suffered from a lot of internal arguments that, if were to get out of hand, would cause some serious issues to the country's unity. This reminds me a lot of things going on internally in our country. We are the currently the strongest country in the world, however, our biggest enemy is ourselves. There is such a segregation between the people in our country. Between blacks and whites, conservative and liberal, even men and women. We seem to have a new thing to fight about every day. This could eventually cause us to fall. However, we have turned into such a "participation trophy" country. However we feel, regardless if we are right or wrong, we are rewarded for voicing our opinion; Even if our opinion consists of violent riots and racist comments. In this comment in the reading, it basically says you can not settle an argument if you keep rewarding each side for there opinion. There will never be any compromise. Sometimes you have to sacrifice for the greater good. This book saw this early on.

  1. While I agree on the majority of your post, I have to say that the thing we argue about in our own country are the same as has always been for all history's past. In Livy, the arguments stem from the possibility of mixed marriages between the classes, the power struggle between the two classes, and so on. In our world today, is it not the same. No matter who it is, what race, religion, preferences, etc; it all comes down to power, who has it, who doesn't.

  2. More important than voicing opinions should be finding ways to settle arguments. As long as both sides insist that they are absolutely right, no middle ground will be found. The agitators are only there to stir things up. Their reward is the chaos that follows. Agitators will always be rewarded when arguments spin out of control. The only way to be rid of the agitators is to be rid of strife.
