A non-depressing look at Gilgamesh.

Dakota Parnell

Wow guys, I feel like the majority of the class has taken such a depressing look on this epic. While yes it has its let down of an ending, is it really though? Was this hair raising, beast killing, and bull taming story of the quest of a human to achieve the status of the gods truly just a let down? Nah not really. In this epic you see a transformation of a character a complete turn around from his old ways. He does gain a friendship like no other and he lost his best friend. This epic is a roller coaster ride of emotions. In the end Gilgamesh does not get his goal of eternal life like the gods. This may not compare to modern day heroic stories but it served its purpose for the people of the time. He learns that he can appreciate what he has done rather than focus on a goal he was not meant to have.  Stories are meant to teach and have been used to teach since the beginning of time. This story teaches that we as humans must enjoy our time here on earth with the ones we love. when it is our time to go reflect on the good we have done and accept our place in the mundane thing called life. When its my time to go I hope to look upon my well built brinks and mortar from a great forest I slayed an epic beast at to get the ceder. I guess that is just me though.
