No Guts, No Glory
This epic is truly epic.
Wild and untamed, glorious and disgusting. I'm truly enjoying this read.
The dynamic of the relationship between Gilgamesh and Enkidu is super interesting, but I just wanna know: I'm not the only one who found it strange that after they battle it out they just hug and become best friends? Is that how it's supposed to work in real life? In all seriousness though, much of this book is focused around this idea of what a hero is, how is supposed to carry himself. Extremely strong, wise, intense, and foolishly courageous, as well as outrageously handsome and denied no pleasure, Gilgamesh is what a hero dreams to be. But as we all know, all hero's have flaws. Gilgamesh's appears to be glory, fame, remembrance. Enkidu is continually telling him, "Dude, we have no chance stop." and his counselors are also continually saying, "Turn back while you can." Is the feeling of recognition, the chase for fame really worth it? Is that the height of all motivation?
I don't think so. And we see what it ends up costing him.

I kind of laughed when they just hugged it out and became best friends after that battle. It was the exact opposite of where I thought that scene was going. And I agree with you about Gilgamesh's fatal flaw! In the text it's referenced as his restless heart, which I thought was really interesting. His ambition seems to overpower his common sense and sense of self-preservation.
ReplyDeleteI totally feel you on the whole Step Brothers 'did we just become best friends?' However, I don't think that Gilgamesh is a good hero to emulate for many reasons. Even if we just disregard the fact that Gil practiced jus primea noctis, he still is a terrible human being. He takes whatever he wants, he fights to the death with anyone who challenges him (and it never is a challenge), and there is no reasoning with him because he knows that he can just kill and be one with the matter.
ReplyDeleteHaving a brother of my own, I definitely found some truth in the whole "hugging it out" fiasco because thats usually how it happens in my house ahaha! There's always a point to stop and consider whether you are taking things in your life a little too far and I believe Gilgamesh never let himself stop to have that moment. And had he actually done so, I don't think the epic would have been quite as epic!
ReplyDeleteHIIIIIIII ZELDA UNDERSTANDS
ReplyDeleteI also thought it was strange when they became bros right after their brawl. Wasn't Enkidu's whole purpose for creation to rival Gilgamesh? Also, they just up and went on adventures together and had each others backs like they'd been best buds their whole life. So, did the gods actually create Enkidu to become friends with Gilgamesh just so he could die and that ruin the king?
ReplyDeleteThe friendship between Gilgamesh and Enkidu was indeed very shocking. As soon as they met each other, they started to fight. This would have led people to think that their friendship wouldn't work out and that they would be enemies.
