Humility and Floods
Two things that stuck out to me on this reading.
1. Humility is a virtue that I believe every culture shares. Gilgamesh's lesson in humility is one I have face in life. When you have to accept the fact of your own mortality, it can be a bitter pill to swallow. Like Gilgamesh lost Enkidu, I once lost a close friend to a terrible accident. I came face to face with death in a way I hope never to deal with again. At that moment, I saw that it could have been me. Gilgamesh took a journey to find immortality. I had to learn that life was finite and the only thing I can do is live the best I can with what God gave me.
2. The flood is a common denominator in the mythologies of the world. It was fun to read what the Mesopotamian mythology was for such an incredible event. Quite literally the Noah of their culture. Amazing.
In the long run, epic poems like this give us a great look into history. Though it is shorter, I would rate this right up there with Homer, Virgil, Dante, and Milton.
P.S. I will be commenting on Zelda and Zane's posts.
