Impractical Matters
Okay, let me just start out by saying, I’m so glad John Calvin is not my dad. He seems like the kind of parent who just creates rules on the spot to make life more difficult. From mandatory church to not being able to make noise. I see that John has good intentions behind what he is doing, but he’s making living for God so legalistic. His laws seem like a mix of moral issues, legal matters, and his own personal preference. Yeah, I sort of understand why he’d want to Put 10 sous fine on the act of going on a pub crawl, but no buying each other drinks is just unnecessary and no fun. Let’s hop down to his laws on song and dance. How does one determine a song as “unworthy” or “outrageous”? These seem like some rather objective laws to me. Laws that can be adjusted and used in a way that is not fully just and more led by an agenda of sorts. And to be imprisoned for 3 days for “spinning wildly” in dance? You might as well take me away now because I’ve accumulated quite a few offenses against this rule in particular. There is to be no complaining between two people. Hmm… I’d love to see how this played out in reality. There would be a long, dense line of people waiting to be “brought into accord”. As much as it would be nice, I don’t think you can solve every moral, social, and general life issue with more rules. Some things just need to be talked out among one another.
In reading some of the proceedings of the Consistory, it’s made me think a little of the Salem witch trials. You see someone you don’t like doing something slightly sketchy, and so you report them for something they haven’t done, yet they’re as good as guilty once they’ve been taken to Judge Calvin’s Court (< a joke). You’d certainly have to take avoiding the appearance of sin to another level in this society. Regardless, I’m thankful we’ve matured and better understood the Word and how to go about living a Godly lifestyle. God's certainly a cool guy.
Note: Will I still don't know why my blogs post sideways, sorry bout that.
I commented on Gary and Spencer’s posts.
Updated note: it seems to have fixed itself this time. Idk man.

I see Calvin’s rules as something closer to a revival of the Mosaic Law… The New Testament has guidelines for a holy life, but it left behind the idea of a crime-and-punishment legal system for a reason. It’s organized and orderly and makes sense (aside from the subjectivity of “unworthy” music that you mentioned), but it misses the point of Christ. Christ took punishment for our sins so we don’t have to, not so we could recreate the Law He fulfilled.
ReplyDeleteSideways posts? Not sure what they look like on your account, but they’ve always been normal to me.
This is going to be a very weird comparison, but Calvin's plan reminds me of Hitler's plan (well dictatorships in general). Their plans look good on paper, but, in reality, it would never work. Your comments on his laws actually made me chuckle a little bit, because I feel the same way. I mentioned in my blog post that some people use dance as a form of worship, so him limiting dance is limiting worship. I totally agree with you that you cannot fix everything. Sometimes all you need to do is talk.
