The Tenth -Madison Flowers
While reading through Zwingli’s articles, the tenth article
grabbed my attention. It states, “As a person is demented when the members of
his body effect something without the head, tearing and wounding and damaging
themselves, so are the members of Christ demented, beating and burdening
themselves with unwise laws, whenever they undertake something without Christ,
their head.” I could not help but think of the Pharisees that we read about in the
Bible so many times, with all their laws and rituals set in place. They are always
trying to save themselves through works and tradition when Jesus is right there
in front of them saying “It’s me. Just trust me,” but none of them listen and
it is so aggravating to me that they won’t just stop and listen. But then here I
am doing the same things sometimes. I run from the Lord trying to make my own
decisions knowing good and well that they will not work but I am just too
stubborn to admit that I am wrong, then I have to humbly turn to God and seek
His forgiveness and guidance. I just love here that Zwingli highlights this
important point in his articles.

I think this is a perfect example of how people use hypocrisy as an excuse for anti-religion arguments. Yes, christians are hypocrites. SO IS EVERYONE ELSE! We all sin and fall short of the glory of God but because of His grace, we can rejoice in the fact that our sins are atoned for and we can live eternally with Him. What a good word!
ReplyDeleteLove this! The comparison with us today is so true. It is so easy to point fingers and say why won't y'all listen when really and truly we do the same exact things. Out of the line you quoted I also remember that without God, we can't do things as well as we can with Him.
ReplyDeleteThis has seemed to be a major topic in some of my courses this week, so I am glad you picked this to write on. There was so much going on in my mind when I read your post that I don't think I could translate into words. But I totally agree with you! We are still guilty of running from things that God wants us to do so that we can do what we think is best. But honestly, we do not know what is best for us, and that is a hard concept for us to understand sometimes. There is also the fact that we cannot do things correctly or in general without God. We need God for everything.
ReplyDeleteI love the comparison you drew between this and the Pharisees. Also, I love your honesty here saying you struggle with the same thing sometimes. Most people do struggle with this, but very few people ever admit it, so thanks!
