Multiple Minds--Kayla

So there are several different storylines that seem to be told during the story of Hamlet. Like most pieces of older literature, it has a literal story and a hidden meaning behind them. One hidden story that I have depicted, is the story associated with mental illness. So in this play, Hamlet is portraying himself as mentally ill or crazy to continue his plot to kill his uncle. I have chosen to believe that he is faking--even though we do not know for sure. But one thing we see for sure is the way he treats those around him. The person who is affected the most is Ophelia. She saw Hamlet as a potential lover. He was infatuated with her as well. Then, suddenly, he has changed and she is experiencing the fall from it. In Act 3, Hamlet tells Ophelia that he was never actually in love with her and used the phrase, "Get thee to the nunnery, go." Not only is Ophelia affected, but his mother and Claudius were too.
The way that I saw this story play out was the effect on the people around a person who suffers from mental illness. I read a quote one time that said, "Remember to keep going, even if it is to keep the happiness of your best friend". While I am perfectly aware that someone who struggles with depression or suicidal thoughts has a hard time moving on from their sense of reality, but sometimes the happiness of others can allow a sense of hope in these struggling minds.
During Hamlet's struggle that he goes through, he is hurting those who are around him. Sometimes this can happen in reality. People who suffer from depression can become harsh and it reflects on others, or the sight of a close family member or friend can be hard for the other person to witness. Depression is a chemical imbalance, however, it has been scientifically proven that surrounding yourself in a good environment and forcing yourself to embody "happy thoughts" can help control these feelings.
Hamlet shows us the hurt that can be inflicted on those you care about. Especially when those emotions are expressed on those around you. While Hamlet is possibly acting during this entire play, maybe he is showing us something different that is read between the lines

So, for an ending note for the day:  Keep in mind--no situation can't be pulled through. No temporary situation is worth an eternal decision. If you can't do it for yourself, do it for your best friend.
