Freewill Is Gone... And So Is Music
Oh Calvin. What a noble pursuit to have a perfectly ordered Christian society. Noble but no doubt, impossible. Even the most controlling regimes such as the Nazis and the Communists could not gain perfect control in their ways.
Reading Calvin's stuff, I felt this urge to scream a little. The kind of regulation we see in this handout is just as ridiculous as it sounds. For real, being imprisoned over music? Most of us have some sort of musical background. Can you imagine being put in jail for a simple song? I know that is only one of the many laws in this reading but it is one I had a pile of issues with. As it says in Ecclesiastes, there is a season for everything. Some of the rules here make sense, but with music it is a fine line. There is song and dance that should and shouldn't be used in worship. There is song and dance fitting for celebration in a normal everyday setting. Calvin almost makes it seem like anything not church worthy is to be forsaken.
Biblical Point: What happened to Michal, first wife of King David. In 2 Samuel 6, David and his people had succeeded in bring the Ark back home. David dance, leaped for joy, and played music before the Lord. Michal despised him for it and in the end, she was made barren in the womb.
Calvin, I'm sure would have similar opinion to Michal. Yet, if God's spirit is upon a person; who cares if it seems abased? I have seen people genuinely worship in ways that most churches today would condemn, even with our progressive ways of thinking. Does that mean they are any less honorable in their actions and does that mean we should cast them in prison or condemn them? I'm happy for your thoughts on this.
