hells bells // hannah schofield
howdy, fellas,
currently blaring "Hells Bells" by AC/DC at the moment and it REALLY set the mood for this entire blog, let me tell you.
I immensely enjoy this reading maybe because it has familiar faces and characters from previous honor's readings or, maybe, because I lived for the Percy Jackson series back in the day and the underworld was sort of portrayed like Dante's version of hell within the series.
While reading, I had to stop for a minute and ponder on the following quote from Canto Two:
"The only things that justly cause us fear are those that have the power to do us harm; the others, not at all." Here, the blessed woman (a.k.a. Beatrice) is encouraging Dante to continue on his journey and understand he is strong enough to see it through. If you were about to saunter into the gates of hell, wouldn't you be scared? Nervous?
I also was struck how he was encouraged to be fearless there, but later, right before he was to enter the gates branded with "ABANDON ALL HOPE YE WHO ENTER HERE", but once Dante and Virgil were fully committed, he had no choice but to leave fear sitting behind him. "Here you must leave distrust and doubt behind, here you must put all cowardice to death."
So, imagine having to kill every ounce of doubt for yourself, for your faith, and for your future while standing at the literal gates of hell? Could you do it?
Also, if you could take 2 things with you for the journey, what are you taking?
I'm taking:
1. portable fan
2. mp3 with only hells bells downloaded on it

I almost did my blog post on that same quote from cantos two as well. We really should only be scared of things that have power to do us harm, but there are a lot of scary things that can't really do us harm unless we allow them to. It is really just a mind thing. I myself am scared of heights. Even though being high doesn't have the power to harm me, it could lead to some harm if i allow it to. And I'm taking an a fan and some tunes also!
