Give chase

So now we are in Malebolge, this mini-hell with very specific subsections for the hypocrites, grafters, simonists. But the thing that intrigued me about these chapters were the “Evilclaws”. The creatures who were originally tasked to protect Virgil and Dante, but later deceived him (what a surprise, creatures in hell are evil and liars). The idea of Virgil and Dante running from these creatures intrigued me. They sought shelter from the creatures in different sections of hell. They found the feeling of relief in hell. Dante created a scenario in hell where a less feeling of “bad” could be felt in hell. The escape from those creatures wasn’t really an escape, as they were going back into hell, and were still in hell. Were the evil claws gonna get Dante and Virgil and still the face down in the mud with the other folks? What is Dante truly afraid of regarding the Evilclaws? What’s gonna happen if they are brought back to the fifth ditch of malebolge? Most of these chapters were difficult for me to find something I truly connect with to write about, but I definitely enjoy a good suspenseful chase “scene” in a book. It keeps things interesting.

I commented on Zane and Cade's posts.

  1. It is a very puzzling part of the epic. Supposedly, Dante and Virgil are supposed to have divine protection. If this is the case, what harm can the demons really do to them? We have a clear understanding from the Bible that even demons must obey God. Perhaps things are different in Dante's Hell. Perhaps the demons think there is nothing worse God can do to them. After all, they're already in Hell.
