What if Caedmon wrote a song about The Rood?
Hello lovely friends,
I hope that you are well and not super stressed with tons of things piling up on you all at once.
If you are, I hope that you're in the zone accomplishing said tasks with outstanding vigor and intelligent grace.
Sorry, this old English is getting to me. Anyways,
I would like to take today's blog post to proudly declare that Music is not of the devil!!!!
I gotta be honest, I know Lucifer is a really bad dude, but he wasn't at first. He was God's worship leader for crying out loud! It was when he decided to sing for his own glory and try to take over the throne that God said "Bye Bye" and kicked him out of heaven, banishing him to the depths of hell where he could rule in anguish and despair(Please excuse my 5th-grade story of Lucifer). With this being said, God created music to be used as a tool to glorify His name, and he created Caedmon to do exactly that! God sent an angel down and gave Caedmon the gift of writing beautiful and eloquent verses that pleased him greatly. All of this happened because Caedmon served God with "a simple and pure mind and undisturbed devotion," and because of it he not only lived in the presence of God but transcended from death to life with foreknowledge of his death.
Now I move on to my second point. The Rood is perhaps one of the most powerful images of Jesus Christ dying for our sins. In the Dream of The Rood, the cross was glorified and watched over by all the universe in its splendor for the work that God had accomplished through it. One of my favorite parts of this poem was when the tree spoke. He said that he "Had to stand firm" because Christ, the Lord of Mankind was upon him. He felt creation weep for Christ, and he was even insulted alongside Christ by his persecutors. Maaaaan this is some powerful stuff!
This is why I really think that Caedmon should've written a verse about the rood. It probably wouldn't be Bethel's "For The Cross" but it would probably be one of the best songs ever written in the name of God.
The end.
I commented on Zelda and Breanna's posts.
I also wrote about the tree holding up Christ! I think that in this poem we see a different perspective from that of the tree/cross and it is interesting indeed. The cross almost has his own sense of honor about his purpose, the tree/cross is forced into this vicious act so he is determined to uphold Christ proudly almost as a form of respect.
ReplyDeleteI wrote about the symbolism and presonification of the cross as well. It is funny how this thought did not come out to many before. Jesus talks about how all of creation will praise him. The cross Jesus was hung on was a tree. So, yes, it would've been dumb to think the tree literally started prasing him, but it was natural for creation to into almost a state of mourning at the death of the savior. The entire earth weeped. However, more than the tree was related to the crucifixtion. The crown of thrones, the place, the weather, were allaspects of creation that had to participate in this act
