Ich Bin Ein Nerd

Spencer Wood

For those who've not been blessed with the TV series IT Crowd, you are truly missing out on some quality, early-2000's, British humor. And I feel sorry for you. Before I get into Boethius' poem, I will present one from Moss, a character from IT Crowd.

--
Arggghhh.
Woman eh?
What are they?
Who knows.
Can't live with them,
Can't find them sometimes.
What's going on in their little heads?
Don't ask me!
I'm not a flipping woman psychiatrist!
But I have learned one or two things from conversations with my mother.

As anyone who presents themselves in front of the public knows, the first thing you give them is what is remembered. This is true with musical productions, prose and poetry, and even face to face encounters. Knowing this I always like to pay special attention to what is said in the beginning. I try to find the Why in the writing. Why include this? Why start with this? Why say it like that? I have found that within the Why, you can see the man.

in the first part, Boethius shows us who he is and how he feels about who he is.
"Poems, once the glory of my green youth, console me now in old age's gloom."
This is mainly self-explanatory of how Boethius feels. Later he says that Death, though called in sadness, is welcomed. This is quite the Gen Y attitude. But I do understand what he's getting at. also, he says "she changed her cheating face." here he is talking about the goddess of fortune and luck. Boethius is angry at the gods for dealing him this fate. He feels cheated by the pied piper of luck for leading him to believe that he would be successful.

As you can see, we found the man. Admittedly, this may not be a complete definition of Boethius, it rarely is. But we do have what Boethius want us to know about him before he starts his book.
