Despair is Not Fair
“Since you’re overwhelmed by forgetfulness of your nature, you grieve at being in exile and deprived of your goods. Indeed, since you are not aware of the end of all things, you think that base and wicked men are powerful and happy. And, since you have forgotten with what rudders the world is steered, you think the earth is tossed about by chance without a pilot. These things are great enough to cause to just illness, but death.”
Book I pages 28-29
“And I saw something else under the sun: In the place of judgment—wickedness was there, in the place of justice—wickedness was there. I said to myself, “God will bring into judgment both the righteous and the wicked, for there will be a time for every activity, a time to judge every deed.”
Ecclesiastes 3:16-17
“Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun: I saw the tears of the oppressed— and they have no comforter; power was on the side of their oppressors— and they have no comforter. And I declared that the dead, who had already died, are happier than the living, who are still alive.”
Ecclesiastes 4: 1-2
The top excerpt from The Consolation of Philosophy is the result of allowing the two excerpts from Ecclesiastes to drive you into despair. As Qohelet is mourning and reflecting over the obscene injustice in the world around him, he forgets the sinful nature of humanity that exists not only in the world around him but with in him. He forgets that all things will be judged and return to God in the end, some to punishment and others to eternity with their redeemer and father. He forgets that God is in control of all things at that though man has free will, he also is held together every moment by the hand of God, who steers the ship that is called life.
Commented on Moriah's and Zelda's
Through the lense of God’s justice and forgiveness, life becomes so much more hopeful and bearable. We don’t have to worry about the numerous events and people in the world who thrive on creating an environment that is completely contrary to what God intended. We can enjoy the earth and know that Gods love and justice will bring all things a round as they should be.
