Borrowed- Madison Flowers
“All is misery-fraught in the realm of earth,
the work of fortune changes the world under the heavens.
Here wealth is loaned. Here friends are loaned.
Here man is loaned. Here family is loaned-
And this whole foundation of the earth wastes away!”
The Wanderer, Lines 106-110
Now I know that these lines seem extremely depressing, as
does much of this poem, but these lines hold a strong reminder. Forget fortune
and whatever misery is brought on by that, look at the lines that follow:
“Here wealth is loaned. Here friends are loaned.
Here man is loaned. Here family is loaned…”
As I was reading this, I could not help but think of how
true this is. None of what I have is actually mine. My money, my family, even
my body is not truly mine. It all belongs to Christ. He has loaned it to me to
use for His glory while I am on this earth. Then I started wondering about how
much of it I actually use for His glory and how much of these things I use for
my glory. The reality of those questions is not something I want to admit, the
truth is kind of ugly. It is easy to get sucked into the everyday swing of
things and forget that we are here, borrowing the Lord’s resources, to glorify Him.
I am not sure if this is where the author of this poem was going with these
lines at all, but this is what I thought of while reading them.
