birds of a feather, we rock together // hannah schofield

howdy, fellas,
this week, I am choosing to discuss Saint Francis of Assisi. I found this little story immensely interesting and endearing!

First off, I am not entirely sure if these were supposedly real accounts or if Thomas of Celano just tossed out this idea, yet I am sure some of you know.

Secondly, as this story unfolded, I was reminded of the Dr. Dolittle movies, except this whole concept would be the Christian version of Dr. Dolittle. Call it Dr. Doyouknowjesus.

Personally, the entire way through I was reminded of Matthew 28:2-5 where it states, "He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me."

I say this because Saint Francis truly unleashed his inner child not only by becoming distracted by the birds but by abandoning his friends to run after the diverse group of birds. He displays youthful awe when he realizes the birds are not planning on fleeing from him, and even more awe when they choose to listen to him praise his Father by speaking the Word of God.
I absolutely adore Francis's patience, grace, and kindness when he "walked right through the middle of them, turned around and came back, touching their heads and bodies with his tunic." Obviously, this is the work of God within the story, but I am stuck on how he is so largely fervent to spread the Gospel that he completely gives a new meaning to these birds' lives, BIRDS. This man is an icon, real or not.
Did anyone else have a different take on this? How would you react if you could suddenly talk to little birdies?

P.S. I named this blog after a song that you all should go listen to.

  1. I can't stop laughing. Too funny. I love the comparisons you draw with Dr. Doyouknowjesus and Matthew 28. I love how eloquently you speak about Francis and the conclusion you draw from his writing. I also love the song lol. Overall, great blog post.

  2. To me, this whole ' preaching to animals' because as a little southern baptist boy, I've been pulled back and forth with 'animals don't have a soul so that they won't go to heaven' and 'of course kitty is. In heaven' so I still think that animals were created inferior to humans and therefore don't have a soul, but I also think that God could bring his other creation to reside with him in glory, but I still don't think that they have the 'spiritual superiority' of having a soul.
