Thanksgiving Day Thoughts with Matthew 6:26 - Zelda
As we enter this holiday season, I think that it is very important that we all remember Matthew Chapter 6. I am currently writing this blog post on Thanksgiving and the world all around me is in a flurry preparing for Black Friday shopping. As I sit here reading this chapter, I cannot help but laugh at myself and others for getting so caught up in all of these material objects. Don’t get me wrong, I love buying presents and running around like a crazy person searching for the best deal, but the point is we don’t need it, it’s wrong. Whether or not I want to accept it I don’t need another pair of shoes or earrings. Everything that I need has been provided to me, and I think that all of us forget that sometimes. Matthew 6:26 clearly states, “Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly father feeds them.” Even though we are completely undeserving and unworthy, God will take care of us. We live in a society so focused on material objects that we can’t look past ourselves and our belongings to realize what we already have. I am not trying to say that nobody should buy Christmas presents this year, but simply that maybe entire days dedicated to shopping for frivolous goods is unnecessary. We should focus more instead on the day of thanksgiving and be thankful for what we have, rather than being so focused on the second we can go buy a more stuff. I for one can say that I am very thankful I read this chapter today and for the Honors class in general. I am so lucky to have a group of people who are so passionately dedicated and driven to learn. Having this class this semester has been a gift and I treasure each of you individually. Thank you so much all for being a better group than I ever could have imagined. I hope you all having a good break and enjoying some time off spent with family and friends.
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
Zelda! I wholeheartedly agree. That passage has always been one of my favorites and a needed reminder for Americans surrounded by and tempted to give in to the consumerist mindset. If we seek God's will above all else, God will take care of our physical needs and provide in every way necessary. What an incredibly encouraging passage for anyone struggling to surrender everything to God. We serve a good Father who knows exactly what we need.
ReplyDeleteI love the irony behind Black Friday. We day after we thank God for what we have, we fight over stuff we dont need; but want. Every year, the time for black Friday shopping moves closer and closer on Thursday. Quite frankly, especially at this school, we are extremely blessed. We have than we need. Even if things seem quite rough for us at the time, we are still blessed with what we have. I like to remind myself, especially around the stressful holiday season, that someone always has it worse. Whether that be in material things, physical, or emotional. Take time, be thankful.
