Not the Church

To think that the God of the universe came down to an Earth He created and died on a tree He spoke into existence just because He loves me blows my mind. But more than that, that we as humans have the opportunity to serve Him. This leaves me with the question, why do Christians today not act like those in the stories of Acts and Romans. Back then they were persecuted very heavily, and it only encouraged them to spread the gospel even more. All the disciples died gruesome deaths with the exception of John, and that wasn't for lack of trying. But even after their time, Paul writes in Hebrews 11 about the heroes of the faith. How their deaths were horrendous, yet they were encouraged because to die is gain. In today's age, most who claim to be Christians are scared to share their faith and for what? How many people in America do you see having their heads chopped off, killed with stones, sawed in two with saws, boiled in oil, banished to a foreign island to rot, or even hung on a cross? If you do, then show me because I've never seen it. We are barely persecuted, and when we are it's with words. No physical harm is ever done in America, and when it is it's very rare. So, I guess I'm just grasping for answers. I'm not excluded from that list of people who don't share, by no means am I perfect. I'm not even close. I'm just curious.

I commented on Gray's and Kayla's.

  1. I guess the kind of prosecution depends on the civilization you live in? Romans had no concept of the idea of freedom of religion here in America, so the kind prosecution they faced for being Christians would be completely different than the kind of prosecution a Christian would face in modern America, but that's not to say the prosecution they faced was in any equal to the kind Christians may face in America -- here Christians have much less to worry about in regards to being murdered for their beliefs. But that prosecution still happens -- it was only a few years ago that in the Middle East (I forget which country, I'm a terrible person) a group of Christians had a bomb set-off at their Easter services because of the fact they were Christian.

But I can see what you mean when you talk about many Christians deciding not share their faith even if their not prosecuted for it, something I know I am guilty of as well. Something I think, again, comes from the place you live -- we live in a place with many different religions being expressed at all times, many times I guess we just assume people have heard the gospel when they actually haven't. We, as American Christians, try to take the burden of spreading the word of God off of ourselves and onto that of society, which is something as Christians we need to address, especially as we start to get more technological and are able to spread more information.
