The Happy Medium - A Quest for Balance and Unity

Good Evening, Everyone.
Let us begin with the dumb Zane thing.
Okay, so can we just talk for a second about how long this debate was? These guys must have been debating for WEEKS! It is literally a THREE-HUNDRED-AND-ELEVEN-PAGE-BOOK! FROM ONE DEBATE! Are you flipping kidding me? How much did my mans Plato's hand hurt after this? DUDE HAD HANDS OF STEEL? Or... at least with the hand he wrote with. OR maybe he took this time to become ambidextrous in writing. That makes more sense because like when your hand hurts so much you can't write anymore but then boss mans Socrates is still talking and you gotta keep going.... Ouch. I would need some ice or like chocolate milk for my hand. oof. Anyways, on to the real deal stuff.

In book four was there a very large focus on balance. Socrates clearly understands and strongly advocates that every aspect of this city, or at least the founding of it, must have balance. For instance, he talks about how the city should not be wealthy, but not poor- a happy medium. When questioned on how the city will defend itself, he brings about a very intelligent idea that surprisingly very few countries do today. Instead of defending their city, they will send out a messenger to tell the enemy that they are not a wealthy city, but their neighbors are and that the city would like to join in comradery with the conquerors and conquer the rich neighboring city. Now I don't believe this to be a fair thing to the cities around them, but it is a great survival tactic and an out-of-the-box solution to his proposal.

Furthermore, I made a lot of connections to Socrate's beliefs upon popular culture. He talks about how music- I.E. popular music should be used to the city's advantage. This is kind of like propaganda in my opinion. What I want to make a connection on is how popular music affects the youth. We see this all over modern culture. People who listen to classical music are often very relaxed and composed, whereas people who listen to pop music- or most youths, are uncontrollable and a force to be reckoned with. When rhythm and blues first became popular, there were riots for concerts and events that were nearly uncontrollable and legitimately had to be stopped by police, like that's anarchy man! (Sorry, my inner Shaggy came out because I realized how boring I sounded.) Think about old videos of Beatles concerts, where girls would literally scream uncontrollably to the point that you couldn't hear what the Beatles were playing at all. SO with that in mind, if the art of pop music is limited, then perhaps the youth of the world would be better behaved. This is a good idea up unto the point that freedom of expression is lost. That's where the buck stops because the governors should not have the right to do so.

I'm not saying that "The Wobble" is art, but we do have the right as hoomans to make things such as the wobble. Am I right?

*Commence Finger Guns* Until next week, friends.

I commented on Gray and Zelda's posts.

  1. I do think Socrates is trying to find this happy medium in the book and keep the peace. The reality is though there can’t be that happy medium because there are wealthy people and there are poor people.
