Separation of Pleb and State
All of our readings so far talk about social class and how it is key to the proper operation of the nation/ city-state, etc. Whether it is indirect address in the way someone talks to another or a direct statement on laws, Ancient societies were very big on who fit where in the world. Our society today still sets rules for how things should be but it has become much more fluid.
Livy first off gives his spill on how history is of great importance to the future. Learning from history gives society the ability to grow and improve on itself. C. Canuleius' plan to change everything makes sense to our world today but in those days it would have been an absolute disaster. How can a Roman society run effectively if people are two busy in the confusion that would take place? Livy even asks if Jupiter himself would allow the state of affairs to stoop so low. An upset in the power that seems to allow the plebs more say in the government, a push for rights; it all sounds very noble to me. Yet, in a world where the educated have the voice and the ignorant are simply bodies for wars and labor, the discord destroys a way of life that existed for a long span.
I can't help but wonder that if the gods had spoken out in the matter, what would they have said. If we go by the standards of that day, surely the gods would have rained down judgement on those who sought to destroy the order of society. They would have seen it as a rebellion against themselves since they are the ones who placed the rulers in power.
By the end of the reading, we see how the Patricians have once again settled power on themselves by handling the situation in a cunning way. The Plebs, ever the sheep, have been satisfied enough to return to life as normal and they still vote for Patricians instead of their own class. Now isn't typical of the government?
Now from the Christian standpoint: God is not to be questioned, but question him we humans do. Yet God does not destroy us in a fit of jealous rage. He sends his people to spread the doctrines of redemption and love to the world. He keeps his wrath at bay with long-suffering. The biggest difference however, is the fact that every person in God's kingdom has a place and every place is key for the kingdom (spiritual church body) to function. Even the "plebs" have a say and influence through their actions and faith.
P.S. I will be commenting on Kayla and Dakota's posts.
