Pointless Arguments
Overall this whole reading kinda irritated me. The whole time it seemed as though the arguments were being defended using circular reasoning, and then there wasn't a good conclusion to the argument. I mean what's the point of them being able to vote if they can't be in the government. It reminded me of Women Suffrage (I might catch heat for that, sorry) or even the Laws of Slavery. Also, what's so bad about these people? Whats the difference other than money? Why is old money better than new money? It's almost opposite of today's society. We encourage people to work hard to make money and then praise them for making it. Whereas some people judge those born into money calling them "spoiled " and "over privileged." I may have completely misunderstood this when I read, or may be completely wrong but that's what I got from this.

One person earned their wealth through sweat and toil—the other person just kinda got it. “Old money” families are tried, wise, and reliable people raised to know how to handle wealth—“new money” has wealth, but they probably haven’t learned how to think like an aristocrat. ...That’s the idea behind it, at least. It’s really not terribly different from the American dream; many people today tend to respect the men who built their fortune from the ground up more than the people who were born wealthy and have never really worked.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the passage may have been a little redundant. The use of Women's Suffrage to give a comparison to this society greatly describes the way plebeians were treated and how they could't get equal rights. Love the analogy.
ReplyDeleteIf you remember from class Romans believed in ancestry. If your parents were smart then you would be too. If your parents were traitors then so are you. This is what they used to justified old money. If your parents were wealthy you deserved that money.
ReplyDeleteWill already covered the questions, but because of the emphases on bloodline and relations to past scholars in this society, the old money got you much further. People did care that you worked hard, they cared about your families resume.
ReplyDeletei didnt think about woman's sufferage. but i aslo saw the circular movement and yiu have to realize that these are politicians, so they know how to stay on a point for a while. however, for us reading this now, its inceadibly boring to read.
