Government Spoilers & Ranting Book 8
I want to apologize in advance if this is not what you were looking for in this blog, but this thought stuck in my mind during and after reading.
It amazes me how Plato is writing all this informative material on the different types of democracies. He is accurate in some of his descriptions of the different types of government. He informs people of what each government and the citizens will be like. Now there are some parts I agree with in his writings, but he is fairly accurate over all.
It boggles my mind when I think about how long this book has been written and how people still try these different types of government over and over again to see what will happen. For example, Hitler basically made a tranny. He believed his form of government and his plan would work. But as most tyranny's do, it failed (yes, I am aware that there are still some governments today that still use this method or a version of it). What made him believe that his would prevail over previous ones? He must not have read this book (this is my lame attempt at a joke). This Hitler example continued to stay in the back of my head as I was reading. Really thought, have previous rulers or people in authoritative positions not read this book. I mean yea, there is no perfect government where everyone is happy and satisfied, but this book could still put some light on the subject on what government is best. Living in a democratic government has obviously made me bias in opinion. I enjoy the freedoms I have as an American citizen.
Yes, there are all different types of government going on around the world today, and all of them seem to be working well, but none of them are perfect, or purely just or purely unjust. In the book, Socrates is trying to discern which government is which. Just or unjust. And he does so by comparing not only the governments, but their citizens. What bothered me at the beginning of the book was how he was predicting how children would grow up based upon their parents, society, and government. This bothered me because not all people are the same. Not every child who grows up in a certain environment turns out the same way. Some may turn out how he said and some may not.
This whole post was basically my rantings toward the book, I hope you enjoyed it. :)
