Orestes and the deathly hallows, pt. 1

Spencer Wood

I feel like the real villain in this play is the chorus. they encourage this whole plot to kill Aegisthus and Clytemnestra. Even if Orestes first said the idea of killing his mother, the chorus instigated and egged on the feelings. And, after the deed was done the chorus, seemed to just drop Orestes like a rented mule. Also, they shucked off the fact that he killed his own mother with just 'no man can go through life and reach the end unharmed', completely undermining the gravity of what just happened.

A question I have: Is the curse of Atreus completed? The last line of the play they are remarking on the curse but it almost seems like they aren't sure if it's over either.

  1. Unless I missed something, I believe the curse is pretty much ended. Though Orestes is still alive, he is going mad, so it doesn't seem likely that he will live for much longer, or he may just never return, so for all intents and purposes, the curse is done. Again, unless I'm wrong.

  2. Ohhh the Chorus being the bad guy. Plot twist. I do find the idea of the chorus to be funny. I love the back and forth this group has. In "Agamemnon" is was a group of elderly men and now its a group of i think hooded women. Still the back and froth and they do really seem to push and egg on whats going on. So does leader it seems. He agrees with the chorus quite often.
