America and the Greatest Honor by Phillip Vo

"For it is only the love of honour that never grows old; and honour it is, not gain, as some would have it, that rejoices the heart of age and helplessness."

As I read this, in addition to the entire paper, I could not help but continually draw similarities to the United States that we know and love today.
When a soldier dies, families are given their medals and clothes, comforted with the thought that "Your husband or wife died in the most honorable way: serving his or her country and you should be proud of their life and sacrifice."

Does honor really rejoice the heart that feels helpless? The family that has lost a loved one?

As he continually spoke about the culture and nature of the country and how the Athenians were above other countries due to their true democracy and military superiority, he also spoke about the greatest and most honorable death one could die being for one's country. This highlights well the nature of Greek honor culture, an allegiance to one's country above self and family.

I find that the only constant comfort and joy one can find, in their truest sense, is in pursuance of the purpose of Christ, and that as much as one tries to justify life through self fulfillment or service to a greater purpose there is none that provides purpose as furthering the kingdom of God.

Yes, the world cannot and will not view the above statement as true because they do not believe in and worship the one true God. But if you wonder about the state of affairs of the world and the hopelessness in it, look no further than the foundation and purpose of one's life, and if it is in Christ or in anything but.

  1. I think "Greekness" and being American are absolutely synonyms! They both praise boldness and sacrifice for ones country. They both grieve as a whole when a soldier losses his life. There is a great sense of unity and brotherhood within the Greek armies. They are a unit and they treat each other as family.
