Zane Duke's Gilgamesh Blog Post

Why on earth has no one made a Gilgamesh movie yet?
a post by Zane Duke

So far, I am very much enjoying this story. Gilgamesh is a very interesting character, and one of the even more astonishing things about this story is how old it is, and the numerous translations created throughout different generations and civilizations. A story of such high quality that it has survived through multiple millennia is a pretty mind-blowing thing.

Which brings me to my point:
When will someone EVER come to their senses and make a MOVIE based off of this story?

Anyways, one of the most interesting things I have seen is the idea of a foil. ENKIDU IS TECHNICALLY THE WORLD"S FIRST FOIL CHARACTER!!! (Sorry, that hit me pretty hard.)  Without Enkidu, Gilgamesh runs wild and instead of being a shepherd or a decent king to his city, he walks around and pretty much ruins people's lives because he's the king. I totally understand why his people called out to the gods, and I also completely understand the purpose behind Enkidu's  creation. Since Gilgamesh met Enkidu, he had someone who matched him, and made him a better person because of it. The gods created Enkidu with that sole purpose too, which is also very interesting. What if God created a person for each of us to have as a foil? Obviously, we're not like Gilgamesh doing all those crazy things but what if we had someone to match us equally in each aspect of our lives, with a completely opposite perspective of life to go along with it? I'm positive God has placed these people in our lives, so that we could see a different side of life and not only become better people but be consumed with a desire to serve others? (Not saying Gilgamesh ACTUALLY served his people by going into the woods to kill Humbaba, but hopefully I made a clear point.)

I commented on Trevor Hughes's post.

  1. I enjoyed your post and agree wholeheartedly that a movie needs to be made.

I do believe God does make a perfect fool for each person. Whether it be a spouse, a best friend, a child, etc.; we all find a person in our lives that make us better. This poem's premise really opens up a floodgate on the topic of humility and companionship.
